When you start blogging as a business, you are looking to increase attraction, traction, and interaction with your audiences. Ideally, you’d like your blog to be a place of discussion. That is why most blogs have a comment section at the bottom of the page. So how do you handle the comments, good, bad and in-between?

Commenting is a large part of the business blog equation. It is probably safe to say that we are all guilty of scrolling down to a bottom of a blog just to read some informative or controversial chatter. However, having a lot of comments is not the gauge of how strong a blog really is. Again quality over quantity. Content marketing has given new life to writers everywhere.  Blogging, or rather, writing articles for a business’ blog is one of the more common freelance jobs for online businesses. But nowadays not only is it articles, columns and blog post but commenting has become a position for hire. Outsourcing commenting is almost equally as valuable at outsourcing the article writing. This also explains why there are so spammy comments too. In either case, it is an indicator of the value of commenting and its ability to create traffic and attention to your blog and site.

As we have said blog comments are more or less a place of unfiltered expression. This non-policed area of blogs allows for spam, trolls, and back n forth petty bickering to become a bit of an issue. There is a way take comments to a more palatable and enjoyable level with a bit of etiquette. So here are some suggestions on how to handle comments:

Ok, maybe not the trolls or spam, but those who have taken the time to write something. Even if it is criticism. See it as an opportunity show your attitude as a company and how you provide customer service. Responding with a note of thanks, even the shortest comments like “cool!” shows you are willing to put some extra effort to your readers.

Recognise Your Frequent Commenters

Blogs are a great way to establish relationships, which can be easy to do with those who are frequent visitors. You only have to give some thanks and recognition. And if they have a blog it is good etiquette to comment on theirs – a friendly rule of reciprocity.

No Negativity

It is easy to feel emotional when someone leaves a negative comment on your business, website, and blog that you have spent the time to curate. But remember that commenting is an easy and public mode of communication. The negative comments may happen. You have to be the rational voice in the conversation and respond respectfully because you represent the entire business.

Allow For Flexible Expression

While you don’t want extreme or overly negative comments, don’t moderate too much. Commenters will usually notice and feel censored so give flexible parameters for your commenters to express themselves.

Yes, we do indeed want to share links to create valuable backlinks to our site but make sure to have the appropriate timing to the topic and discussion at hand. Randomly posting or posting with little conversation makes you appear more like spam than a thought leader.

Follow Up With Your Comments

People are hired to comment on blogs just as people are hired to write them. And yes, keeping up with the comments is certainly not an easy task. But make sure that if you have left a comment, that you have followed up with it not to have left the conversation hanging.

Lastly, write comments, not novels. Keep it concise, short and sweet. Leaving paragraph after paragraph of text is mostly going to have readers skimming past it. If you have that much to say actually make your own blog post on the topic.

As there are right ways of doing things there are also wrong ways. You can help set the example of good commenting. Because if you are not commenting in a healthy manner then why comment at all. Here are common mistakes that people make when commenting on blogs.

Not Using a Real Email

When commenting, fully commit. The internet is a stage where you get to say what is on your mind and be recognized for it. So don’t hide after you have said it. Now if you don’t want to mingle your work email with your blog one, create one specifically for your blogging tasks.

Not Being Relevant

Your comments should be relevant. This is the key to creating a following and traction online with people and your SEO, so when you only want to be silly or unprofessional it kinda kills the mood of the commenting thread and makes others not want to interact with you.

There is No Personality

While being silly or quite casual in your comments may show your personality rather quickly it isn’t the right personality. But also don’t comment as a drone or with blandness. Showing your best version of your personality creates more intrigue for people to follow up on what you have to say.

Leave the Complexity and Ego Out

Jumping off the previous point, while you want to show your personality don’t go too far. Pause to make sure it is the right place, time and audience. Also, while the comment section is a place to share, maybe hold off on sharing your things in your real life or anything that may seem like tooting your own horn.

Writing a blog is an awesome way to create content and to connect with your customers. However, it really is only part of the blogging equation.
